Facebook cover photos were introduced by Facebook in late 2011, as a part of company’s major redesign of user profiles. They enabled users to create and add photos located at the top of their timeline. Unlike profile images that appear next to your name across the website, and are part of Facebook since inception, cover photos are newer and unavailable for viewing unless a user visit your profile. Just like your profile image, Facebook cover photos are public, meaning everyone will be able to view them. On their cover photos, people usually feature something they care about or believe in.
So, what size are Facebook covers, and how do you add or change them? Well, Facebook suggests that the minimum width of your cover photo should be at least 720 pixels, as using a picture with a lower width may result in not-so-pretty, pixelated picture. The perfect Facebook cover photo is 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall. If you have enough skills and experience using Photoshop or even programs like Paint, you should be able to create a picture that matches this resolution.
This brings us to next question. Should you design your own cover, or use a pre-made one? Essentially, it is up to you. The point of a Facebook timeline cover is to use a unique picture that describes you as an individual. This can be a picture from your wedding, your kids birthday party, your latest travel adventure or something similar. Of course, you can also use your cover photo to show solidarity or support for a certain cause, or even show your loyalty to a certain brand. If you lack skills needed to create your own timeline cover photo, or simply lack the time, you can use one of the pre-made Facebook covers from websites such as Anylayouts.com.
